Smoking out

the truth
about
tobacco

All about smoking...

WHAT IS IN THE SMOKE ANYWAY?

There are more than 7,000 chemicals in commercial tobacco smoke. (Such as: ammonia, benzene, butane, hydrogen cyanide, and toluene.) This includes hundreds of chemicals that are toxic, and about 70 that can cause cancer.

There is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke. Secondhand smoke can cause heart disease, stroke, and lung cancer in people who don’t smoke. Children are especially vulnerable.

HEALTH DEATH EFFECTS

Smoking harms nearly every organ in the body. It can cause heart and blood vessel disease; lung disease; cancer (almost anywhere in your body); and impacts to your bones, eyes, teeth, gums, fertility and pregnancy.

Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S. In fact, 20% of all the deaths in the USA are linked to tobacco.

GENERAL EDUCATION, PREVENTION, OR STEPPING TOWARDS FREEDOM

If you want helpful resources to help a peer, friend, or family member you can:

  • Share resources from this website, including this page.
  • Point your friend to NIDA’s Step by Step Guide for Teens and Young Adults.
  • Encourage your friend or family member to speak with a trusted adult.
  • Note: If a friend or loved one is abusing drugs, alcohol, or sex/porn you might have to put boundaries or step away for a while. It is important to protect your own mental health and not put yourself in situations where you could be tempted or forced to do something bad for your mind or body.
